This article provides a theoretical account of how public and media attention to misinformation, fake news labels, and related threats may negatively impact trust in factually accurate information and authentic news. Additionally, through an experimental case study of pre-bunking interventions, the article illustrates the extent to which tools designed to enhance media literacy in response to disinformation may also have unintended consequences for trust in reliable information.
